Eggs, Herbs, Cocktails & Pizza: Time to Stock up on The Basics

Eggs, Herbs, Cocktails & Pizza
Eggs, Herbs, Cocktails and Pizza
It's Spring on Cape Cod and it's this time of year that our shelves start to swell up again with lots of great gadgets and inspirational tools for your kitchen.  Some kitchen basics that we must have in stock this time of year center upon eggs, herbs, cocktails, and pizza: the basics.

Eggs

Eggs are incredible.  For years we've been told to be wary, don't eat the yolks, blah, blah, blah. But the truth is, eggs are a super food, and the best way to start your day {unless you're allergic}.  Do you remember the Incredible Edible Egg Jingle?  We'll they've made a new one, and it's pretty funny.  You can listen to it here:

One of our preferred ways to eat eggs is poached.  It's so easy to make a perfectly poached egg with the RSVP Endurance Egg Poacher Sets.  The best thing about these stainless steel egg poacher pans is they do double duty as sauce pans and saute pans, while having the added bonus of egg poacher inserts with easy-to-remove handles and trays.  So you can have your eggs (and YOLKS) and enjoy them too, because they're good for you!

Herbs

Herbs are becoming more and more popular, and more legal too.  Spring is a great time to start planning your herb garden.  Whether you have a simple windowsill or a fancy kitchen garden with all the trimmings, fresh herbs at your fingertips add fantastic flavor to your cooking.  Last year we sold hundreds of RSVP Herb Scissors for good reason: they work great! Unlike regular scissors, these Herb Shears have 5 stainless steel blades that will cut fine pieces of herbs right where you want it without the need of a cutting board and knife.  And they won't bruise your tender herbs, because herb bruising is just wrong.

Cocktails

Cocktails are fun.  Yes, indeedy.  Fun.  Fun to make, fun to drink, and fun to share.  One tool that every cocktail connoisseur should not be without is the RSVP Stainless Steel Muddler.  Perfectly suited to making flavorful Mojitos, this Stainless Steel Muddler also works to crush ice, and more importantly, release and meld the fullest flavors for all of your favorite, classic cocktails.  And since this muddler is made of Stainless Steel, it won't hold on to odors and contaminate the flavors you want to accentuate.  We have a hard time keeping these handy Muddlers in stock - they are so popular with our cocktail-loving clientele.

Pizza

While Pizza is arguably NOT a super food, it is super.  A certain person we know and love would just assume eat pizza morning, noon, and night, much to the chagrin of her parents.  Pizza is arguably the most addicting delicious food to make on a Friday night.  Yes, I said "make", not buy.  Making your own fresh pizza at home costs pennies and comes out hot-from-the-oven, not luke-warm from the insulated bag after a turbulent 30 minute drive through traffic.  Pizza making is a family activity worth savoring, in more ways than one.

Some essential Pizza Making Tools that just came back in stock after being wiped off our store shelves are the old world style RSVP Endurance Stainless Steel Pizza Cutter Rocker and the RSVP Stainless Steel Pizza Peel Spatula.

Both of these tools are better than your average pizza making gear.  The Stainless Steel Spatula is a versatile and sturdy gadget for transferring all kinds of goodies from the table to the oven or vice versa.  You can even use it to remove cakes and pies from the oven.  The Stainless Steel Pizza Cutter lets you rock right across your pizza in one fluid motion without crushing your tender toppings.  And it also works great to chop veggies and transfer them from cutting board to cookware.

Come in tomorrow and check out the fresh new products arriving daily that will put a spring in your cooking and entertaining this year.  Or shop online at LaBelle's General Store.  And check out our recent finds below for some additional spring-time inspiration.

The Most Clever Cutting Board by Chef'n

You might be wondering what's the best cutting board for your kitchen.  If you've been shopping, you know that cutting boards are a dime a dozen, but if you want one that stands out among the rest, the Chef'n Prep Station Cutting Board has some pretty unique features.  Not only do we love using the Chef'n Prep Station as our main cutting board, but we also get a lot of use out of its clever built in collapsible colander and food transfer tray.

What most impresses us is the bamboo cutting board which is a solid surface to chop on, yet it's kind to our knives.  Bamboo is also naturally anti-microbial which is a plus.  The size of the cutting board is just right for normal, everyday meal prep work and comes in at 11" x 15".

We love to use the collapsible colander to rinse off veggies and fruit, and while that's draining over the sink edge, we can be working on the surface of the cutting board.  The food tray is also a major bonus.  Who isn't looking for an easy way to transfer your 'choppings' without making lots of 'droppings'?  It's so awesome to be able to push your cuttings right into the food tray and the easily transfer to your pan or bowl, without losing a single dice!

Everything just slides back together for convenient storage. When space is at a premium, it's pretty handy to have three tools packed tidily away until the next food preparation time rolls around.  We just slide ours next to the coffee maker until we're ready to use it again.

Culinary School Supplies Shopping List

I recently met an enthusiastic young man who's headed off on a culinary adventure.  He'll be studying classic French cooking techniques and international cuisine.  Where's he going?  He's enrolled in the spring semester at BU's Culinary Arts Certificate Program and he came into the store with his Culinary School Supply Shopping List.   If you didn't know, Boston University has an innovative, intensive culinary course of study that was co-founded by Julia Child and Jacques Pepin.  Along side Jacques Pepinsome notable instructors include Mary Ann Esposito, Jody Adams, and Ana Sortun.  It looks like a fabulous, state of the art program and if you're interested in cooking and not looking to spend several years in college and many thousands of dollars, this certificate program is just a semester long.

You may be wondering what was on the young man's school supply list.  Here are the Culinary School Essentials required by BU's Culinary Arts Program:
Culinary School Supplies
  1. 8" Chef's Knife
  2. 3" Paring Knife
  3. Y-Peeler
  4. Lemon Zester Rasp
  5. 6" Boning Knife
  6. Instant Read Thermometer
  7. Digital Timer
  8. Serrated Bread Knife
Not only is this a great list for someone just starting out in the culinary field, but it's also a solid list of must-have kitchen tools for any home cook or someone outfitting their kitchen for the first time.
